But alas, it is a question with an impossible answer. I avoided the trigger warnings because it’s clearly spoilers, and now wonder if I would’ve felt less scarred if I had read them beforehand. I went into this book knowing fully well that it would be distubring, awful, and expected the worst, and yet the imagery shocked me, to the point where I had to put the book down for days, curling with dread that I have yet to discover more of Jude’s past, that what I have read barely scratched the surface. Maybe I’m just so naive to the world, but my god, the amount of cruelty depicted here is beyond anything my imagination could come up with. For many a time I was too numb to even cry: at the graphic descriptions of self harm, sexual abuse, physical abuse, you name it. At this point I don’t know if it’s a positive or negative experience that it has allowed me to have and this review has that uncertainty.
